The Mayfield Ranch lies against Middle Mesa and Carrizo Creek runs through the property. The ranch has great topography with beautiful canyons, plenty of trees & live water but you can get around it and hunt with relative ease. Deer habitat is perfect with cedar cover, oak brush, mountain mahogany and other brushes throughout the ranch. Grasses are blue grama, buffalo grass, all of the bluestems and western wheat grass. The alfalfa/ orchard and brome grass field draws and keeps the deer close. There is a very good population of mule deer on the mesa and canyon sides and whitetail deer in the bottom near the creek. The ranch owners have managed the deer population to ensure that only 4 point or better bucks have been taken for the past several years and they allow minimum hunting annually. In addition, the property also has Antelope, Bear, Mountain Lion and small groups of Elk have been seen and heard on the property. The creek and ponds also hold Small Mouth Bass and are an attractant for Waterfowl. Truly a Turkey paradise, there is an abundance of wild turkey that are present along the creek and on other parts of the property. The ranch has hosted a "Women in the Outdoors" hunt, the NWTF Regional Director and many hunters have taken their Merriam turkey here as they work on a Grand Slam. The ranch has also hosted bird watching groups as this area seems to be a migratory path for many species of birds. The ranch also is in the first year of a 10 year lease on a 640 acre school section that it controls. The ranch is well watered by the creek and a pipeline that runs throughout. There are 6 wells that provide water for the household, pipeline for stock water tanks and irrigation for the hay field. The ranch provides a year round home for 100-120 cows and calves. An 1,800 sq ft modular home was placed on the property in 2003. There is also an older mobile home and an adobe cottage that provide beds for hunters and guests. A 1940's vintage rock barn provides garage and storage space. There are two box cars near the corrals for tack, feed and additional storage. Two overhead storage bins provide pellet storage for cattle feed.
