The Mountain Lands of Wyoming

Wyoming is a mountainous state where the Great Plains lie just below the Rocky Mountains. As a state, it has the second highest elevation average above sea level, next to Colorado, at 6,700'. The lowest elevation anywhere in the state lies at along the Belle Fourche River at 3,125', and its highest peak is Gannett Peak at 13,804'.

The state overall averages a bit more than 15" of rainfall each year, but the state capital of Cheyenne also receives close to 60" of snowfall each year. Daytime high temperatures in the state average just under 60 degrees, but in January the highs often barely reach 5 to 10 degrees.

Wyoming's Mountain Regions

There are some 109 mountain ranges and sub-ranges within Wyoming. With that median elevation of 6,700', clearly, there is little of this state that isn't located within a mountain range. And in all those mountains, there's a lot of land for sale.

The Laramie Mountains are found along the eastern edge of the Rockies with the river of the same name cutting through the mountains and merging with the North Platte River in the eastern part of the state. Casper, Laramie, and Cheyenne, the state capital, are all within this area. It's a popular area for hiking, climbing, and mountaineering. The Laramie Plains has a large cattle and sheep grazing population where native grasses abound, but little else can be grown.

The Medicine Bow Mountains extend down from Colorado between Albany and Carbon counties, just west of Laramie. The Medicine Bow National Forest makes of a large part of the area, but there is also quite a bit of private land here. The rivers are full of fish, and the land with mule deer, elk, and moose offering good fishing and hunting.

In the western part of the state, the Wind River Range is a part of the Rockies and home to the highest peaks in the state. This 100-mile mountain chain affords stunning views and backdrops not found anywhere else. In the summer months, mountain climbers and backpackers find the area both breathtaking and challenging.

Investing in Wyoming Land

Of course, land prices vary greatly from one area to the next, and most of Wyoming's land is still very affordable. Look for large amounts of acreage here from 60 acres near Cody to 3,000-acre properties within the Big Horn Mountains. Of course, smaller acreage homestead properties are always available, whether just outside of town or further out in the wilderness.

Hiking, Fishing, and Rodeos

With all of its mountains, hiking and camping are enjoyed recreation within the state. Some of those mountains turn into sports resorts in winter offering skiing, cross-country skiing, sledding and more. Whether you are looking for a remote spot to build a cabin for your personal use or considering building a group of cabins, or a chalet close to the thousands of acres of snowboarding and ski runs, recreational tourism locations are available.

With 27,000 miles of rivers and streams, anglers seek out some of the best trout fishing spots in the country here. Again, if you're looking to find your own private prime spot or wanting to start a guide service to some of the best fishing sites available, Wyoming's got plenty of land for sale to start your venture.

There's a reason a bucking bronco appears on Wyoming license plates. The state is also known as the Cowboy State with rodeo being its Number 1 sport. Most every city in Wyoming hosts a rodeo every spring or summer. High schools and colleges have rodeo teams competing every year to get to the state finals.

If you're looking for property where cattle, or "buffalo roam," and you can play all day, Wyoming has plenty of room. With close to 98,000 square miles it is the 10th largest state in the country, and remember it has the smallest population. Land for sale here includes ranching and grazing land, farmland, and recreational land with a bank along the river, or your own private stream or pond. Maybe you will find a property with your own hot spring.
