North Carolina may have the largest population of NASCAR fans in the country. It does have the ninth largest population of a state in the U.S. with more than 10,383,000 people. The state capital, Raleigh, has nearly 404,000 residents.
In the states nearly 54,000 miles, elevations range from sea level at the Atlantic Ocean shore to 6,684' above sea level at the top of Mt. Mitchell in the Appalachian Mountains. It's the highest point in the country east of the Mississippi River.Geography, Topography, and Climate
North Carolina is bordered by Virginia to the north and South Carolina to the south. The Atlantic Ocean lies to the east and Tennessee to the west. It also shares a short border with Georgia to the southwest.
Most of the state is humid with a subtropical climate. The state's geographical regions include the Atlantic coastal plain, the Mountain region with the Appalachians to the west, and in between lies the Piedmont region.
The land here is diverse with acreage for sale along the Atlantic coast, where properties are available in moderate-sized lots. The areas of timberlands closer to the mountains, and that where livestock are raised in the southern part of the state, offer larger acreage plots.North Carolina Agriculture
Within the state, there's a balance of livestock and crops each contributing about 50% of the state's agricultural income. Agriculture and agribusiness bring in $76 billion annually to the state economy. There are roughly 49,500 farms on approximately 8.4 million acres, some of which are for available for sale.
When looking at potential Ag acreage to invest in, consider that the average farm is between 400-500 acres in North Carolina with the most production in sweet potatoes and flue-cured tobacco. Some $562 million of tobacco is exported each year.
Not surprisingly a lot of cotton is also raised here, as well as soybeans, grain corn, and peanuts. If your interest is in ornamental products consider looking for property with greenhouses and nursery crops. There are also apple and peach orchards, as well as blueberry and strawberry patches located here.
While it is not the leading state in raising pork, it does register as number four. If livestock is more your thing, the state's hog farms are located in the southeastern area. There are nearly 2,300 hog farms maintaining some nine million hogs there. Forest Land and Lumber
Nearly 19 million acres within the state are covered in forest. Cash receipts for logging bring in $390 million each year. Eighty-five percent of the forested land is privately owned and available in 10- or 20-acre lots for sale up to much larger. Mixed properties of timberland and grazing land may see prices as low as $1,500 per acre for 100 acres. Here you can build your new home overlooking your ranch.
Tree species are overwhelmingly hardwoods with 70 species versus 15 species of softwoods. Trees include red maples, sweetgum, Douglas firs, and Quaking Aspen.Recreational Acreage in the State
North Carolina is home to many fishing locations including ocean fishing in the Atlantic and along the barrier islands known as the Outer Banks. Off the pier you may catch Croaker, Spanish mackerel, bluefish, and flounder. Out on the water, blue and white marlin, sailfish, and yellowfin tuna are sought after.
Freshwater catches along the state's rivers and lakes include bass, catfish, perch, sunfish, and trout. Hunting is also popular here including smaller game such as squirrels, rabbits, and opossums to eastern bear and Piedmont bear. Quail and pheasants are also abundant. Hunting and fishing property is plentiful in 100-acre lots and more with pricing from around $3,000 per acre and up. A perfect place to build your own cabin in the woods.North Carolina Acreage for Sale
