When most people think about Idaho, they picture a state that is one potato farm after another. While Idaho farmers do produce approximately 30% of all the potatoes grown in the United States, those who call Idaho home quickly point out that the state has a great deal to offer its residents.

4 Reasons to Love Idaho

If you've decided it's time to relocate to another state, there are four compelling reasons to make Idaho your new home state.

The cost of living in Idaho is low. It's estimated that the cost of living in Boise, Idaho is 41% less expensive than living in New York City. One of the main reasons Idaho's cost of living is so much lower than other areas is the housing cost. The average rental cost of a one-bedroom apartment in Boise is $831. The same apartment in New York City or San Francisco is $3,600. The median price of houses in Idaho is $299,900. The same home would cost approximately $414,000 in Portland, Oregon.

Idaho is full of opportunities for outdoor recreation. A 2017 nationwide study showed that the state has the highest number of residents partaking in outdoor recreation. Popular outdoor activities include:

A surprising amount of the land for sale in Idaho is farmland. It's estimated that there are approximately 400,000 acres of Idaho farmland for sale at any given point. The estimated median price of Idaho farmland is $556,904. While most of the farms and ranches in Idaho are used for livestock or crop production, there are many Idaho ranches that focus on wildlife production and market themselves as a vacation destination for hunters. Hunting provides Idaho's farmers and ranchers with an opportunity to use the mountainous sections of their land that isn't suitable for farming or raising livestock.

One of the interesting trends being seen in Idaho is the number of buyers who are looking to start fisheries. Idaho aquaculture, particularly trout fish farming, has become so popular that the state currently ranks number one in the production of rainbow trout. Approximately 70% of Idaho's more than 100 aquaculture facilities are based in Magic Valley.

The promise of gold is what first attracted settlers to the state, and people remain just as obsessed with what is under Idaho's soil.
