Kentucky's Bluegrass and Horse Farms

Kentucky is known as the Bluegrass State and home to the Kentucky Derby. The rich blue-green grass, originally introduced by Northern Europeans, is high in fiber and calcium, while low in protein making it a good feed for horses. And, Kentuckians love their horses!

Bluegrass, Horses, and Horse Ranches

Lexington is the Horse Capital of the World with about 450 horse farms in the area. It's some 78 miles down the road to Churchill Downs in Louisville, where the Kentucky Derby runs each May. While Kentucky's horse industry is deeply rooted in thoroughbred racing, other horses are bred and raised in the state including Standardbreds and American Saddlebreds.

Kentucky's other Bluegrass is its music which began with people branching out and also settling in Tennessee, the Carolinas, Virginia, and West Virginia. They would write songs about their lives in the country and farming in what was then a remote territory. With the onset of country music, bluegrass stemmed off in its own right when Bill and Charlie Monroe formed their band, "Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys."

Kentucky's Economy & Agriculture

Besides its horses, Kentucky has deep roots in coal mining and agriculture, which continue to play a major role in the state's economy. Feed corn, wheat, tobacco, and soybeans are its primary field crops. A lot of tomatoes are also grown here, but livestock, including those thoroughbred horses, and beef cattle make up more than 65% of the state's agricultural revenues.

Kentucky's manufacturing economy comes from transportation equipment including cars, vehicle parts, and aircraft parts. The state also manufactures cleaning products, some pharmaceuticals, and paints.

Kentucky is considered a southeastern state which borders seven other states mostly to its the north. It averages an altitude of 750' above sea level with a high point of 4,139' at Black Mountain. The Cumberland, Green, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Ohio rivers all run through the state. It has five different geographical regions including the Bluegrass Region in the north.

The Cumberland Plateau, which is an extension of the Appalachian Plateau from New York to Alabama, is filled with mountains and plateaus. In the Northwest, the Western Coal Field is home to the state's coal mines. The Pennyroyal Region along the southern border consists of rocky ridges to flat lands with occasional rolling hills. And, the Jackson Purchase Region at the southwestern tip of the state is a part of the Great Plains.

Kentucky enjoys a mild, albeit a rather damp climate, with between 40-50 inches of rain per year depending upon the location within the state. Average temperatures range in the mid to high '60s during the day, to the '40s at night.

Kentucky Fun Facts

Kentucky is known for the beginnings of the Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise, catfish, and hush puppies. Other unique foods here include burgoo, derby pie, bourbon balls, and Louisville style chili.

It's also known for moonshine and Bourbon. In fact, 95% of the world's bourbon is made in the state.

Abe Lincoln was born in Kentucky. So were George Clooney, Johnny Depp, and Muhammad Ali.

Fort Knox, south of Louisville, houses more gold than anywhere else in the world.

Kentucky has a lot of great waterholes for fishing from its two manmade lakes, Kentucky and Barkley, to its many accessible rivers and streams. Giant catfish are what "I caught the largest fish" tales are made of, along with bass and crappie.

Other outdoor recreation includes horseback riding, as well as boating, swimming, hiking, and caving.

Available Land for Sale

If you are looking to make the Bluegrass State your home, it has a lot to offer. Some 4.5 million residents make it their home. Outside of the larger population centers of Louisville, Lexington, Bowling Green, and Hopkinsville, there's a lot of farm and pasture land. There's also a lot of recreational land with hills and mountains, rivers and streams.

Property values vary by region with lower pricing in the woodland regions progressing higher through pasturelands and farmlands. When looking for homestead property, pastureland, horse farms, or getaway property look no further than LandBroker MLS.
