Land For Sale in Alaska

The wild, rugged beauty of the Alaskan landscape is the stuff dreams are made of. Existence far from the bustling crowd is just one of the things that make living in Alaska totally unique. Its massive size and vastly different environments include mountainous regions, glaciers, gigantic forests, and active volcanoes. It is also home to some of the most extreme weather in the world.

Alaska's enormous scale is difficult to comprehend, covering 663,268 square miles. It is our nation's largest state. The northern part of the state of Alaska is above the Arctic Circle and is mostly tundra and tiny villages. Finding land for sale in Alaska can be challenging. The Last Frontier

Alaska is nicknamed "The Last Frontier" for a reason. It is our northern and westernmost state and is not part of the contiguous U.S. There are six distinct regions of Alaska, all with their own characteristics.

  • The Interior is mostly uninhabited wilderness and is the largest area of Alaska. Denali, the highest mountain in North America, is here. Fairbanks is the only town.
  • The Southwest runs 500 miles inland from the Bering Sea and contains the Yukon–Kuskokwim Delta, one of the most massive river deltas in the world.
  • The Southeast contains the capital city of Juneau and the Tongass National Forest, the biggest national forest in the U.S.
  • South Central is where most of the population lives and includes the city of Anchorage.
  • The Aleutian Islands are a 1,200-mile long chain made up of over 300 volcanic islands.
  • The North Slope is in the Northwest Arctic and consists of tundra and enormous reserves of crude oil.
Land in Alaska

The U.S. Federal Government owns 65% of Alaska, and 87 million acres are managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This includes the 16 million acre Arctic Wildlife Refuge, the largest refuge in the world. 101 million acres are owned by the State of Alaska, and another 44 million acres are owned by the many native and regional groups operating under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act.

Ownership in Alaska

Only 1% of the land is owned by private interests, but in Alaska, that is a lot of property. Vast tracts of hundreds of acres are available as land for sale. In Alaska, you have the opportunity to purchase some of the largest and wildest plots of land available in the United States. Its diverse wilderness gives you many unique opportunities not available anywhere else in the world.

Alaska's Natural Resources

Alaska has a large number of natural resources, including:

  • Oil reserves
  • Gas reserves
  • Fish
  • Forests and timber
  • Wildlife

Because of its extreme and varied environment, Alaska has many different types of industry.

Mining

Oil is the number one product mined in Alaska, accounting for a full 95% of the state's mining industry. Zinc, silver, gold, and coal are also extracted.

Fishing

Alaska has a huge fishing industry and is responsible for the most valuable fish catch in the nation. Unalaska/Dutch Harbor and Kodiak fisheries are two of the most important fishing areas in the world, and the fleet's haul of fish drives the worldwide commercial fishing industry.

The type of fish caught almost as varied as the fishermen on the boats. They include king crab, snow crab, scallops, sea urchins, shrimp, smelt, salmon, flounder, cod, rockfish, rockfish, herring eggs, and many others.

Manufacturing

The processing of fish products is another profitable industry in Alaska. The center of the worldwide salmon packing industry is on Alaska's Kodiak Island.

Finding land for sale in the beautiful state of Alaska is an exciting idea for all of the above reasons and more. Want to see your Alaska property listings on Land Broker MLS? Join our co-op by signing up today.
