Buying Land in the Land of 10,000 Lakes

Did you know Minnesota has more recreational boats than any other state: one per every six people? If you didn't know that, did you know Minnesota is the home to the largest retail shopping center in the country? Yes! So if you ever feel like a day of shopping in the Nation's North Star State, look no further than the Mall of America in the Minneapolis/St. Paul suburb of Bloomington -- a structure equaling 78 football fields.

As the largest retail shopping center in the United States and the host to over 40 million annual visitors, the Mall of America can boast about having more than 2,779,242 million feet of retail space (not including its amusement park, Nickelodeon® Universe), and is home to over 520 stores, 50 restaurants, 24 amusement park rides, and a 1.2 million-gallon aquarium, featuring sharks, stingrays, giant sea turtles, and more.

While Minnesota is known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes, as of 2019, the state has 11,842 lakes of 10+ acres. After all, the word "Minnesota" in Sioux means "cloudy water" or "sky-tinted water" based on "minni" (meaning water) and "sotah" (meaning "sky-tinted" or "cloudy"). Before the state received its name, "Minnesota" was first the name of the Minnesota River.

But what else about Minnesota and its land make it so spectacular? Let's explore the state's history and learn other fun statistics to truly develop an appreciation for this magnificent part of America.

Minnesota History and other Fun Facts

Before we explore the geography of Minnesota, here's a brief history and some other fun facts.

  • On May 11, 1858, long before Charles M. Schulz, Judy Garland, Bob Dylan, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Prince called Minnesota "home," the state was admitted to the Union.
  • Minnesota inventions include water skis, the stapler, Scotch tape, Wheaties cereal, the automatic pop-up toaster, rollerblades, and Snickers.
  • As home to the world-famous Mayo Clinic, Minnesota is the home to where the first open-heart surgery and the first bone marrow transplant were performed in America.
  • Before the Metrodome Stadium was torn down (circa 1990) to make room for the Mall of America, it was the only location in the country to host a World Series, a Super Bowl, and an NCAA Final Four Basketball Championship.
  • With a population of 5.6 million people, Minnesota's geography is made up of 86,943 square miles with Lake Superior at its lowest point (601 feet) and Eagle Mountain at its highest (2,301 feet).
Minnesota Topography and Geography

According to City-Data.com, "Minnesota, lying at the northern rim of the Central Plains region, consists mainly of flat prairie, nowhere flatter than in the Red River Valley of the west. There are rolling hills and deep river valleys in the southeast. The northeast, known as Arrowhead Country, is more rugged and includes the Vermilion Range and the Mesabi Range, with its rich iron deposits… Most of Minnesota, except for small areas in the southeast, was covered by ice during the glacial ages. When the ice melted, it left behind a body of water known as Lake Agassiz, which extended into what we now call the Dakotas and Canada and was larger than the combined Great Lakes are today; additional melting to the north caused the lake to drain away, leaving flat prairie in its wake. The glaciers also left behind large stretches of pulverized limestone, enriching Minnesota's soil, and the numerous shallow depressions that have developed into its modern-day lakes and streams."

Minnesota mined minerals, as well as other construction materials, consist of:

  • Iron Ore
  • Quartzite
  • Granite
  • Gabbro
  • Limestone/Dolomite
  • Peat
  • Silica Sand
Minnesota Industries

Minnesota industries -- the old and the growing industries -- consist of agriculture, mining, bioscience, and fishing. Minnesota is a leading state in annual farm income. It ranks at #5 among the states, generating about 4% of the nation's total agricultural receipts. In terms of revenue generated, Minnesota's top five agricultural products are corn for grain, hogs, soybeans, dairy products, and cattle and calves.

The most important community, business, and personal services include private health care, computer programming and data processing, legal services and automobile repair. Ranking second in the services sector is finance, insurance and real estate industries. Wholesale (automobiles, farm products, groceries) and retail (discount stores, food stores, restaurants) trade rank third among the service industries.
