While Minnesota is known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes, as of 2019, the state has 11,842 lakes of 10+ acres. After all, the word "Minnesota" in Sioux means "cloudy water" or "sky-tinted water" based on "minni" (meaning water) and "sotah" (meaning "sky-tinted" or "cloudy"). Before the state received its name, "Minnesota" was first the name of the Minnesota River.

Before we explore the geography of Minnesota, here's a brief history and some other fun facts.

  • On May 11, 1858, long before Charles M. Schulz, Judy Garland, Bob Dylan, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Prince called Minnesota "home," the state was admitted to the Union.
  • Minnesota inventions include water skis, the stapler, Scotch tape, Wheaties cereal, the automatic pop-up toaster, rollerblades, and Snickers.
  • As home to the world-famous Mayo Clinic, Minnesota is the home to where the first open-heart surgery and the first bone marrow transplant were performed in America.
  • Before the Metrodome Stadium was torn down (circa 1990) to make room for the Mall of America, it was the only location in the country to host a World Series, a Super Bowl, and an NCAA Final Four Basketball Championship.
  • With a population of 5.6 million people, Minnesota's geography is made up of 86,943 square miles with Lake Superior at its lowest point (601 feet) and Eagle Mountain at its highest (2,301 feet).

According to City-Data.com, "Minnesota, lying at the northern rim of the Central Plains region, consists mainly of flat prairie, nowhere flatter than in the Red River Valley of the west. There are rolling hills and deep river valleys in the southeast. The northeast, known as Arrowhead Country, is more rugged and includes the Vermilion Range and the Mesabi Range, with its rich iron deposits… Most of Minnesota, except for small areas in the southeast, was covered by ice during the glacial ages. When the ice melted, it left behind a body of water known as Lake Agassiz, which extended into what we now call the Dakotas and Canada and was larger than the combined Great Lakes are today; additional melting to the north caused the lake to drain away, leaving flat prairie in its wake. The glaciers also left behind large stretches of pulverized limestone, enriching Minnesota's soil, and the numerous shallow depressions that have developed into its modern-day lakes and streams."

It ranks at #5 among the states, generating about 4% of the nation's total agricultural receipts. In terms of revenue generated, Minnesota's top five agricultural products are corn for grain, hogs, soybeans, dairy products, and cattle and calves.

The most important community, business, and personal services include private health care, computer programming and data processing, legal services and automobile repair. Ranking second in the services sector is finance, insurance and real estate industries.
