Nebraska Land for Sale

There are several reasons you should consider living in Nebraska. Some of the reasons include a seemingly endless list of fun outdoor activities for the family, low crime rate, low unemployment, affordable real estate combined with a low cost of living, and some of the most affordable healthcare in the country.

Right now, nearly 2 million people love calling Nebraska their home state. The population is growing at about 0.08% a year which makes it the 25th fastest growing state. Nebraska's most populated cities are Omaha, Lincoln, Bellevue, Grand Island, and Kearney.

The Lay of the Land in Nebraska

When most people think about Nebraska, they picture acres of flat land that's filled with wheat and corn. While there are some stretches of plains in Nebraska, large chunks of the state is actually quite hilly. The plains, which have several rivers and streams crisscrossing them, are found on the east side of the state, which is where a large majority of the state's farmland is located. The western side of the state is home to Nebraska's Sand Hills. The hills are essentially sand dunes that attract hordes of visitors each year.

The Sand Hills are up to 400 feet tall and 20 miles long, and slopes can have a 25% steepness rating. The Sand Hills were created by grass and other vegetation catching and capturing the sand that was blowing across the prairies. There are 19,300 square miles worth of sand hills.

Visitors are often surprised to discover that Nebraska's Sand Hills isn't completely dry and dusty. It's not uncommon to find lakes, streams, and marshes at the base of the hills. An underground reservoir contains between 700 and 800 gallons of water to supply these wet sections. The Sand Hills are home to more than 700 different plants which serve as feed for the 535,500 head of beef cattle that roam the hills.

The two biggest rivers in Nebraska are the Missouri River on the eastern side of the state and the Platte River.

Nebraska's Economy

Nebraska has one of the lowest costs of living in the United States. It's almost a full 9% lower than the national average. Nebraska's annual salary is $43,597.00. The state's unemployment rate of 4.2% is the fourth lowest in the United States.

Contrary to popular belief, there's more to Nebraska's economy than beef cattle and corn. The state's top industries are:
  • Agricultural manufacturing (includes meat process and food processing)
  • Finance/Insurance
  • Health Care
  • Military contracts
  • Transportation

Nebraska is a great choice for anyone who is about to retire. A recent Gallup survey determined that Nebraska was the 10th best state for retirees to call home. Reasons the state is so good for senior citizens is because as a rule, the state's population enjoys a relaxed, open life that leads to a high standard of wellness. The sheer number of outdoor activities provides seniors with ample opportunity to stay active and fit, while activities such as the ones held in Omaha's Orpheum Theater and Lincoln's public art exhibits are great for socializing.
