New Jersey Land For Sale - Land Broker MLS

The State of New Jersey is known for quite a few things. It is known as the Diner Capital of the World, home to more than 500 diners. It is also known for having the largest population within the smallest area in the county. The state is only about 150 miles in length and 70 miles wide, for a total of less than nine thousand square miles. The population nearing nine million people puts an average of 1,000 residents in each square mile.

New Jersey's Cities, Economy, and Sports

Trenton is the capital of New Jersey, but with only 85,000 people, it is far from the most populous area. Newark has the most residents with close to 283,000. Jersey City comes in second with 243,300.

Important to New Jersey economy is its production of chemicals with pharmaceuticals having the largest niche. Shampoos, lotions, detergents, and industrial chemicals are also produced. Food processing is an important industry including bakery goods, roasted coffee, confectionery products, fruits, meats, and vegetables.

The state leads the way in catching and harvesting clams. Other seafood products include blue crab, lobster, flounder, and mackerel.

Horses play a part in the state economy as well, contributing more than $600 million each year. Both pleasure horses and racehorses play a part in this while providing various forms of recreation.

And while only about 17% of New Jersey land is dedicated to agriculture, it is key to the production of horticulture products including poinsettias, roses, chrysanthemums, and geraniums. Commercial sod is also grown, and New Jersey plays an important role in asparagus production, as well as bell peppers and eggplant, endive, lettuce, and spinach. Cranberries and blueberries are also grown.

While New Jersey doesn't claim any major league sports teams, the New York Jets and New York Giants football teams, as well as the New York Red Bulls soccer team, are all based in New Jersey with home games played in the Garden State.

New Jersey Land and Geography

Nearly one-half, or 45%, of New Jersey is covered in forest. The southern portion of the state lies in the Atlantic Coastal Plain with gently rolling hills. Salt marshes can be found toward the Atlantic Coast along with meadows and shallow lagoons. Most of the farmland is in the southwest along the Delaware River with about 822,000 acres dedicated to farming.

The mean elevation of the state is approximately 250' above sea level. The highest natural point, named High Point, sits at 1,803'.

New Jersey is divided into 21 counties. The northernmost county, Sussex County which was named for Sussex, England, is home to an inactive volcano. The Beemerville Volcano has been dormant for some 440 million years. In recent years, the land here has become higher in demand with housing built up close to the summit.

But, Sussex County is not the only place in New Jersey with land for sale. You can find small amounts of acreage prime for development in many areas. Listings of 10-20 acres can be found, especially in the forested areas or farm areas. Equine ranches are sometimes on the market, as are other types of land for farming, and recreational land for hunting and/or fishing.

Some Interesting New Jersey Facts

New Jersey has some firsts, as well as other quirky facts. Cape May along the coast is considered America's first resort area. Atlantic City has the world's longest boardwalk and is where the first Miss American Beauty Pageant was held in 1921. The first baseball game was played in Hoboken. The first drive-in movie theater was in Camden, and the first submarine ride was taken in the Passaic River.

The state was crucial in the Revolutionary War with more battles fought here than in any other colony. Strategic points in the war were the battles of Trenton and Princeton. Alexander Hamilton lost his duel to Aaron Burr in Weehawken, New Jersey.

There is no doubt that New Jersey has played an important part in US history and remains a popular state today.
