New Mexico's Mountains and Topography

The Rocky Mountains run along the northern part of New Mexico which encompass some of the 88 mountain ranges that run throughout the state. There are a lot of winter sports activities including downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing and more. In the summertime, these mountains have great hiking trails, campgrounds, and fishing. Hunting is permitted during various times of the year.

There's a semi-arid climate, dry throughout most of the state with high plains and deserts found between the mountain ranges. The state's approximate 121,500 square miles are divided into 33 counties including Santa Fe County which is home to the state capital of the same name, located in the northern part of the state. Albuquerque, the largest urban population center, is located in Bernalillo County some 64 miles to the southwest along U.S. Highway 25.

Land Ownership

About one-third of New Mexico's land is owned by the federal government including its National Parks. The state is home to 23 Native American tribes, the largest of which is the Navajo Nation spanning parts of Bernalillo, Cibola, McKinley San Juan, and Socorro counties and extending into Arizona.

There is also a lot of the state's mountain land in private ownership with prime locations for a private mountain home, getaway, or investment property. Some of that property is on the market, often in large acre-parcels, for the possible development of trails for those aforementioned recreational sports, a private hunting lodge, or cattle grazing and other agricultural interests. You may also find smaller plots for sale, great for a growing family or a retirement home.
