Situated at the base of the West Elk Wilderness in Western Colorado alongside Blue Mesa Reservoir, Colorado’s largest body of water, lies one of the most coveted private sporting retreats in the Rocky Mountains. The statistically low number of visitors to this wilderness area offers the opportunity to enjoy private backpacking and hiking trips over more than 200 miles of non-motorized trails, many of which are wide enough for horseback trail riding.

Just to the east of the property lies West Elk Creek, a wild trout stream. The ranch, as a private inholding, provides a unique access opportunity to the remote and rarely visited upper reaches of the creek with beaver ponds and clear running water emanating from the isolated 13,042 ft West Elk Peak, the highest summit within the West Elk Wilderness.

Blue Mesa Lake and marinas are located within the Curecanti National Recreation Area boundary and include the famous East Portal of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison River. They offer an abundance of lake fishing and watersports opportunities. A cove in the reservoir close to the property’s west boundary makes it possible to moor a watercraft just offshore near the ranch.

As far as the eye can see, the views encompass big, authentic western landscapes. The sheer drama of the Soap Creek tributary of Blue Mesa Reservoir just to the west of the property, with its massive castle-like rock structures, was an important film location for scenes appearing in the award-winning John Wayne movie, True Grit.
