Prior to road access, the region was traditionally used by Indigenous Athabascan peoples for seasonal hunting, fishing, and travel routes through the Susitna River basin. As access improved, homesteaders, recreational cabin owners, and outdoor enthusiasts began establishing properties around Caswell Lakes, drawn by abundant wildlife, quiet lakefront settings, and proximity to Anchorage without sacrificing wilderness solitude. The nearby Nancy Lake State Recreation Area further shaped the area’s identity as a destination for canoeing, snowmachining, and backcountry recreation.
