Agriculture in Illinois
Illinois is an agricultural state with 75,000 farms covering more than 75 percent of the state's total land area. These farms produce soybeans, corn, hogs, cattle, and dairy products. It is also a leader in biofuels. The state's agricultural output is more than $20 billion annually. Corn is 40 percent of the total, making it a great place to find farms and land for sale in Illinois.
While the average plot size in the Chicagoland area is one-fifth of an acre, farmlands range from 50 to nearly 85 acres. In recent years, good productivity farmland has yielded between 170 and 190 bushels per acre. Cash rents on professionally managed farms have decreased slightly and are now holding steady. The main crops are corn and soybeans.
The majority of the state is suburbs, cornfields, rolling plains, friendly small towns, and land for sale in Illinois. Springfield, the state capital, is located in the middle of the state and has a large population of government workers. It has excellent medical centers and the friendly ambiance of a mid-size town. These towns have the benefits of little traffic and shady tree-lined streets. Forests, grasslands, and parks are often a walk or bike ride away. Most are close to train stations that make a day trip or weekend to Chicago easy.
Illinois's 580 miles of Mississippi riverfront and 273 miles of Illinois River appeal to water-loving families. The little towns along the rivers have historic attractions and newer activities such as wine tasting and riverboat casinos. Its state parks, scattered across the state, offer opportunities to enjoy the natural beauty of Illinois. Starved Rock State Park is a favorite, just three hours from Chicago with lush waterfalls, miles of hiking trails, rock bluffs, riverboat tours, and an abundance of birds and other wildlife. There is a large abundance of IL hunting land.
