Kentucky's Bluegrass and Horse Farms

There is some amazing land and farms for sale in Kentucky here at LandBroker MLS. From farms and ranches to large acres and land for business development, we have you covered. Kentucky is known as the Bluegrass State and home to the Kentucky Derby. The rich blue-green grass, originally introduced by Northern Europeans, is high in fiber and calcium, while low in protein making it a good feed for horses. And Kentuckians love their horses!

Kentucky Essentials: Bluegrass and Horses

If you're looking for farms for Sale in Kentucky you will be able to find a great property. Lexington is the Horse Capital of the World, with about 450 horse farms in the area. It is roughly 78 miles down the road to Churchill Downs in Louisville, where the Kentucky Derby runs each May. While Kentucky's horse industry is deeply rooted in thoroughbred racing, other horses are bred and raised in the state including both Standardbreds and American Saddlebreds.

Kentucky's other Bluegrass is its music which began with people branching out and also settling in Tennessee, the Carolinas, Virginia, and West Virginia. They would write songs about their lives in the country and farming in what was then a remote territory. With the onset of country music, bluegrass stemmed off in its own right when Bill and Charlie Monroe formed their band, "Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys."

Kentucky's Economy & Agriculture

Besides horses, Kentucky has deep roots in coal mining and agriculture, which continue to play a major role in the state's economy. Some of the primary field crops in Kentucky are: Feed corn, wheat, tobacco, and soybeans. While a majority of tomatoes are also grown there, livestock, thoroughbred horses, and beef cattle make up more than 65% of the state's agricultural revenues. We have an amazing selection of farms for sale in Kentucky as well as undeveloped acreage for sale in Kentucky as well here at LandBroker Co-op.

Kentucky's manufacturing economy comes from transportation equipment including cars, vehicle parts, and aircraft parts. The state also manufactures cleaning products, some pharmaceuticals, and paints.

Geography

Kentucky is considered a southeastern state which borders seven other states mostly to its the north. It averages an altitude of 750' above sea level with a high point of 4,139' at Black Mountain. The Cumberland, Green, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Ohio rivers all run through the state. It has five different geographical regions including the Bluegrass Region in the north.

The Cumberland Plateau, which is an extension of the Appalachian Plateau from New York to Alabama, is filled with mountains and plateaus. In the Northwest, the Western Coal Field is home to the state's coal mines. The Pennyroyal Region along the southern border consists of rocky ridges to flat lands with occasional rolling hills. And, the Jackson Purchase Region at the southwestern tip of the state is a part of the Great Plains.

Kentucky enjoys a mild, albeit a rather damp climate, with between 40-50 inches of rain per year depending upon the location within the state. Average temperatures range in the mid to high '60s during the day, to the '40s at night.

Kentucky Fun Facts

Kentucky is known for the beginnings of the Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise, catfish, and hush puppies. Other unique foods here include burgoo, derby pie, bourbon balls, and Louisville style chili.
