The Buckeye State
Nicknamed after one of its native trees, the Buckeye State of Ohio is comprised of rolling plains with no high mountains. Ohio's population is more than 11.5 million, ranking it the seventh highest state in size of population in the country. Its land mass is just under 41,000 miles, making it the 35th largest state. However, there is still a lot of farm land for sale in Ohio, ranching, entertainment, and Ohio hunting land.
Lying in the northern Midwest, Ohio's winters are cold, and summers are mild, but can be humid. The average lows in January and February are in the 20s, while the average highs during the summer are in the mid-80s. The state receives an average 37.5 inches of precipitation, a mixture of rain and snow.
A Bit of Ohio History and Industry
Ohio was settled after the Revolutionary War, although it had been formerly inhabited by Native Americans. In fact, the name "Ohio" is believed to have originated from an Iroquois Indian word translating to "Great River." After the Civil War, Ohio settled into becoming a major industrial state. The bordering Lake Erie to the north gave a route for exports, as did the railroad.
Today, Ohio is an important part of the American automobile and aviation industries by developing and building component parts for cars, trucks, and planes, as well as offering assembly for some. Industry here also includes fabricated metals such as tools and hardware, valves and pipe fittings.
Agriculture, a Leading Issue in Ohio Economy
Like many other states, Ohio is dependent upon agriculture. When looking for farms for sale in Ohio it may be helpful to know that the top five crops include soybeans, grain corn, dairy products, nursery/greenhouse products, and hogs. In fact, it is a leading producer of hogs for the country, and ranchers also raise cattle, broiler chickens, and turkeys. Other grain crops include wheat, hay, and oats.
Ohio growers also produce fruit including apples, grapes, peaches, and strawberries. Vegetables grown here include cucumbers, potatoes, sweet corn, and tomatoes. There is some mining done in Ohio as well, chiefly coal, followed by natural gas. Limestone and salt are also mined, the latter being the eldest mining product for the state.
