History

Gilpin County is steeped in Colorado’s hard-rock mining past. This stretch of the mountains is also part of the storied Lincoln Hills area, established along South Boulder Creek in the 1920s as one of the few mountain resort communities in the country that welcomed Black families during segregation, and effectively the only one of its kind west of the Mississippi. It was home to Camp Nizhoni, a summer camp for Black girls, and to Winks Lodge, which hosted figures like Duke Ellington and Langston Hughes and was named a National Historic Landmark in 2023.
