Mine Oasis

We call this 6-acre tract a mine oasis and it is one of the most unique tracts of land we have seen in several years. Although small, this 6-acre tract has created an oasis for deer and turkey. Beginning in the 1960s and 1970s, all the surrounding land was strip mined leaving this 6-acre tract untouched. The current owners said a small section was farmed in the 1970s but since that time the field was abandoned and has reverted to forest, while the remaining forest has not been touched since the 1960s or longer. Sixty plus years later this tract of land contains the largest mature oak trees in the immediate area acting as a magnet to deer and turkey. Although the surrounding land that had been strip mined and reclaimed; it still lacks the abundant mast producing oaks found on this tract. The adjacent land was recently surveyed, and boundary corners are well marked but you should not find it difficult to find the lines, just look for the largest oaks and hickories.

Today, most of this reclaimed mine land produces deer and is sought out by hunters. This tract was not mined essentially making it a magnet for deer and turkey which are numerous in this part of Ohio County. Located just south of the large acreage of soybeans and corn found along the Rough River bottoms this tract seems to be a magnet for deer.

There are several locations that would make a perfect cabin site. During years of heavy oak mast production this small 6-acre tract will attract numerous deer.

Currently the right of way and access is through a neighboring property owner after you pass through a locked gate found along Carter Ferry Road. From the gate to the property line is approximately 0.6 miles. Most of this can be accessed by vehicle (4x4 recommended) and the last 0.1 mile would be to walk or use an ATV or UTV. This part of the access road needs some work to upgrade it to a road suitable for most vehicles.
