History History of Cuerno Verde Pines

Cuerno Verde Pines is a residential community located in the Wet Mountain Valley of Custer County, Colorado, southeast of the towns of Westcliffe and Silver Cliff. It spans approximately 3,667 acres on the western slope of the Wet Mountains, overlooking the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The community consists of 537 tracts (lots), each typically 5-6 acres in size, with over 225 acres dedicated to parks, open spaces, and common areas for hiking, wildlife viewing, and recreation. County-maintained roads provide access, and the area is known for its natural beauty, including streams, canyons, and elevations ranging from about 8,227 to 8,897 feet.

Origins of the Name

The name “Cuerno Verde” (Spanish for “green horn”) derives from a prominent 18th-century Comanche chief known as Cuerno Verde, who led raids against Spanish settlements in the region during the 1700s. In September 1779, Spanish forces under Governor Juan Bautista de Anza defeated Cuerno Verde and about 50 warriors in a battle at the base of what is now Greenhorn Mountain, approximately 20 miles southeast of the subdivision in the San Isabel National Forest.  The mountain and nearby features were later named “Greenhorn” in reference to the chief, whose nickname came from the “green” (young and bold) antlers of bull elk or deer used in Comanche headdresses. The community borrows this name, tying it to the broader Native American and colonial history of southern Colorado.

Location Just a short drive to downtown Westcliffe, where the coffee’s hot, folks wave when they pass, and the pace feels just right. This is real Colorado—uncomplicated, open, and alive with possibility.

If you’re ready to trade noise for nature and traffic for trails, this property’s waiting.
