J Lazy J Ranch

Red Lodge Creek runs through J Lazy J Ranch for about a mile, and the ranch controls access to a second mile beyond it, across 520± acres of landlocked state land on the property’s edge. Only one neighboring property shares that access. That’s two miles of blue-ribbon trout water, brown, rainbow, and brook trout plus mountain whitefish, with almost none of the pressure you’d find on public stretches.

The ranch runs on 1,465± deeded acres at the base of the Beartooth Mountains, 15± minutes from Red Lodge. Multiple ditches, wells, and reservoirs keep 145± irrigated acres in hay and water livestock and wildlife across the property without competing for the same source. The ground has supported 120 cow-calf pairs year-round and produces roughly 300 tons of hay annually, enough to carry the herd through winter and graze the rest of the property the remainder of the year. This is working ground, not a backdrop.

Elk return to the same secluded meadows and timbered coulees every spring to calve. Mule deer hold in the hills and draws year-round. Pheasants, ducks, wild turkeys, and whitetail work the creek bottom, and bald and golden eagles hunt the corridor above it. Few ranches this productive also carry this much sustained wildlife traffic.

A newly built rustic-modern headquarters anchors the property, with a separate manager’s residence or guest house for family, staff, or guests. Down at the creek, a private barbecue and picnic area sits above a natural swimming hole, the kind of spot you end every day at, regardless of whether you spent it fishing, riding, or working cattle.

Production ground, sporting ground, and two miles of water that’s effectively yours alone: this combination is getting harder to find anywhere in Montana.
